Know That All of Nature Is But a Magic Theater
“Know that all of nature is but a magic theater, that the great Mother is the master magician, and that this whole world is peopled by her many parts.”
It’s snowing.
Snow creates new worlds within our world.
Noisy cities become newly silent.
Familiar trails…boulevards…snow-formed…at rest.
Front yards and hillsides are filled with the laughter of kids (and snow-loving adults.)
I like watching the snow fall and how it articulates invisible patterns in the air— drifting river currents swirling and eddying which then pile up in standing snow waves.
I looked up this quote by David Lynch to begin the post: “Know that all of nature is but a magic theater…”
It’s from his book Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity— and he's quoting the Upanishads.
May the snow falling shake up the snow globe of your world… in a good way. Like a visit to a magic theater. May new dreams and possibilities and kindnesses (yes, the world needs more kindness) find their way into your imagination, and your reality.
May we do right by this planet, creating a more diverse, beautiful world for each other and our more-than-human neighbors— birds, trees, the multitudes of flora and fauna who make our world so beautiful, uncanny, and unique.
May your art, may your music, may your imagination, and you—flourish in this new year.
